Trappist Varietals

Simply put, Trappist beer is beer brewed by or supervised by monks within the confines of a Benedictine abbey. I know what you're thinking: if only defining craft beer could be that easy! But it's a little more nuanced, and the definition of Trappist beer has been as contentious as the definition of craft beer at times.

The term "Benedictine" refers to a branch of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance who follow St Benedict's Rule (try saying that after a few Rochefort 10s). They take three vows to join the order: stability, fidelity to the monastic life, and obedience. They do not take a vow of silence, contrary to popular assumption, rather chatting is discouraged. As a result, they dine and sip their beer in near quiet, much like Wetherspoon customers at 11 a.m.

Trappist monks are the ones who make the beer. As members of the International Trappist Association, fourteen monks currently make Trappist beer: six in Belgium, two in the Netherlands, and one each in Austria, Italy, England, France, Spain, and the United States (ITA). The ITA, on the other hand, awards the Authentic Trappist Product designation to only eleven breweries that meet their stringent criteria. Because there are no resident monks at Achel, it is no longer considered a Trappist brewery as of 2021.

The term Trappist is derived from the abbey of La Trappe in Normandy, which was the birthplace of the movement. As is customary, it began with one individual being dissatisfied with the loosening of regulations and attempting to create his own. As a result, it may appear weird that they have become so well-known for producing that raucous liquid, beer. The reasoning is that working with one's hands is a vital part of becoming a Trappist monk, hence to fund the monastery, residents must do manual labor rather than any other kind. As a result, most monasteries are located in rural areas, surrounded by fields of cattle and crops.
