Discover this Martha's Cabernet Sauvignon 1974
Heitz Wine Cellars was established in 1961 by Joseph and Alice Heitz during a period when the population of Napa Valley wineries had been reduced to its lowest level, following Prohibition (less than 24 existed then compared with over 500 today). A pioneer in many ways, Joe was part of the first graduating class in a master's degree programme in viticulture and enology at the University of California at Davis in 1951.Following his graduation, he worked first at Gallo and then in 1951 under André Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu Vineyard where he remained for 10 years. While here, he also worked as a professor for the enology programme at California State Fresno for 4 years and it is during this time when he purchased a small vineyard of Grignolino and started Heitz Wine Cellars - 5 years before a young Robert Mondavi launched his own winery. They produce a series of Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines including Martha's Vineyard, their most famous, which is produced from an eponymously named vineyard, for which they have a long-term lease (since they first bought the fruit in 1965). They were the first to vinify single-vineyards setting forth a trend that has continued.

Critical Acclaim
I had this wine twice over a period of thirty days, rating it an astounding 99 and 98 points. A monumental California Cabernet Sauvignon, it appears to have approached its plateau of maturity but should easily last for 20-25 more years. There is no rust, amber, or brown to the saturated dark purple color. The spectacular, huge, Mouton-Rothschild-like nose of mint, cassis, lead pencil, and toast is remarkably youthful. Staggeringly concentrated, this full-bodied, super-rich wine possesses moderate tannin, fresh, lively acidity, and a blockbuster, rich, fleshy finish. This is a monumental effort!
