Abouriou is a red wine grape variety from the southwest of France, particularly in the Côtes du Marmandais region. It produces deeply colored wines with soft tannins and moderate acidity, often featuring flavors of blackberries and plums. The grape is typically used in blending but can also be found in single varietal wines. Abouriou wines generally have an ABV (alcohol by volume) of around 12-13%. Its popularity stems from its ability to produce rich, fruity wines that are approachable and versatile with food pairings.
The area where Abouriou is predominantly grown benefits from a temperate climate with sufficient rainfall, ideal for this grape variety. Despite its lower profile compared to other French varieties, Abouriou has a dedicated following due to its unique flavor profile and the ease with which it can be paired with a variety of dishes, from grilled meats to hearty stews. The grape's resilience to disease also makes it a favorite among sustainable and organic wine producers.
