Aglianico is a red grape variety that is native to southern Italy, specifically the regions of Campania and Basilicata. It is known for producing full-bodied, tannic wines that are often compared to Barolo and Barbaresco from Piedmont. Aglianico is a late-ripening grape that requires a long growing season and warm temperatures to fully ripen.

There are several different clones of Aglianico, each with its own unique characteristics. The most common clone is Aglianico del Vulture, which is grown in the volcanic soils of Basilicata. This clone produces wines with high acidity, firm tannins, and flavors of black cherry, blackberry, and licorice. Another clone is Aglianico di Taurasi, which is grown in the hills of Campania. This clone produces wines with more finesse and elegance, with flavors of red fruit, spice, and leather.

One of the most famous brands of Aglianico is Taurasi, which is made from the Aglianico di Taurasi clone. This wine is considered one of the best red wines in Italy and is often compared to Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino. Taurasi is aged for at least three years in oak barrels and has flavors of black cherry, plum, and tobacco.

Another famous brand of Aglianico is Aglianico del Vulture, which is made from the Aglianico del Vulture clone. This wine is known for its intense aromas of black fruit, spice, and earth, as well as its firm tannins and long finish. Aglianico del Vulture is aged for at least two years in oak barrels and can be cellared for up to 20 years.

Aglianico is also used in blends, particularly in the wines of Campania. One example is the wine called Taurasi Radici, which is made from a blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso. This wine is aged for at least two years in oak barrels and has flavors of red fruit, spice, and tobacco.

Aglianico is a great drink for several reasons:

  • It is a complex wine that offers a range of flavors and aromas, making it a great choice for wine enthusiasts who enjoy exploring different styles of wine.
  • It is a relatively affordable wine, with many high-quality options available for under $50.
  • It is a wine with a rich history and cultural significance, as it has been produced in southern Italy for centuries and is an important part of the region’s culinary traditions.
